Red Kite

Red Kite, Rotmilan, Milvus milvus, Milan royal, Nibbio reale, milan cotschen

This majestic bird of prey has been seen more and more frequently in residential areas as well as above Swiss cities in the past ten years. You’ll mostly spot it from below: the light head, the belly with rusty red and brown streaks, the black and brown wings, each with a big white patch, and the long, strongly bifurcated tail. It can circle for hours on the lookout for prey, while steering with its tail. Like all birds of prey, the red kite has excellent vision. Especially in spring you can hear its mating calls, which are reminiscent of a horse’s neigh. Fewer and fewer red kites migrate to southern Europe in winter nowadays but instead stay here, where they find enough food. To sleep, groups of up to a hundred birds gather in trees.
