Eurasian Blackbird

Eurasian Blackbird, Amsel, Turdus merula, Merle noir, Merlo, merlotscha

The Eurasian blackbird is among the most common breeding birds in Switzerland. You’ll encounter it all year round, both in forests as well as residential areas. The males have black plumage and a bright yellow beak, the females are dark brown with a blurred and speckled chest and brown or yellow beak. Male blackbirds are brilliant singers: you’ll often hear their melodious and varied whistling at dusk and dawn from the highest point of buildings or trees. Blackbirds sometimes already sing as early as January – they are one of the first to herald spring. They are also known to build nests in flower pots.
