House Sparrow

House Sparrow, Haussperling, Passer domesticus, Moineau domestique, Passera europea, pasler da chasa

“The sparrows are whistling it from the roofs”, as they say in German when something is no secret. But actually sparrows do not whistle at all; they chirp. House sparrows are almost everywhere where humans live. They can be spotted throughout the year, often in lively chattering groups. The small birds are coloured in various shades of brown and grey; in the first half year, in their nuptial plumage, the males have a black throat and chest. House sparrows like to bathe, be it in water or sand. Both are good for plumage care. So the German expression, “Dreckspatz” (literally “dirty sparrow”) does not really fit at all! Sparrows are found across the world, except in Antarctica.
