Carrion Crow

Carrion Crow, Rabenkrähe, Corvus corone corone, Corneille noire, Cornacchia nera, corv nair

If you see big, black birds in the Zurich area, you are most likely looking at carrion crows. Carrion crows have big, strong beaks and a flat forehead. Their wings are rather short. The similar-looking rooks are more common in northwestern Switzerland. The carrion crow’s voice sounds like its name: often you’ll hear its loud, creaking ‚crae-crae-crae’ from early in the morning. The carrion crow is an exceptionally adaptive bird, hardly picky and a quick learner. For example, it drops nuts to crack them. But it is also a thief: eggs, chicks and small mammals are part of its diet.
