European Robin

European Robin, Rotkehlchen, Erithacus rubecula, Rougegorge familier, Pettirosso, puppencotschen

Well-known for its trademark orange-red chest, the robin is a roundish bird, just short of a sparrow in size. Its back is olive brown, its belly whitish. The orange stretches from the chest over the beak and up to the eyes. Males and females look identical. The robin’s song is bright and chatty, but always carries a melancholic note. You’ll often hear it until late at dawn or even at night. It is one of the few birds that also sings in autumn; this is when it is easiest to get to know its voice. When you see robins in the settlement area during the winter period, they are most likely birds that hail from Northern Europe to spend the winter here. “Our” robins either stay in the woods or migrate to the Mediterranean.
