Eurasian Magpie

Eurasian Magpie, Elster, Pica pica, Pie bavarde, Gazza, giazla

The magpie, like many of the birds local to the settlement area, does well in various conditions. It is not quite the size of a pigeon and is characterised by its black and white marking, its strong beak and long tail. Part of its black feathers shimmer blue-lilac to green. Its loud “shack-shack-shack” cannot be missed. The magpie can be spotted throughout the year and is very loyal to its territory. It has a bad reputation as a “thieving magpie”; it has also been held responsible for the disappearance of small songbirds in the settlement area. But there is no proof for this. It is under pressure itself: its nests are often pillaged by carrion crows.
