Black Redstart

Black Redstart, Hausrotschwanz, Phoenicurus ochruros, Rougequeue noir, Codirosso spazzacamino, cuacotschna da chasa

Like the Eurasian blackbird and the common chaffinch, the black redstart has followed humans into residential areas and cities. It is approximately the size of a sparrow, relatively slender and predominantly grey. You’ll recognise it by its rusty orange tail which is incessantly moving, bobbing and bending. The male’s face and neck are often almost black. In mid-March, the males return from their winter quarters to the South of Europe and then frequently sing from gable rooftops and other elevated spots. Its song sounds a bit like a broken radio transmitter: a creaky and scratchy forced beginning, followed by a few whistling sounds. The black redstart also sings in autumn and thereby already prepares its territory for the following breeding season. Not all birds migrate south, some stay here all year.
